Why does my DSL connection quit during the night?

niels0827 asked:

I’ve had AT&T high-speed DSL internet service for about a year, and in the past two months, every single night, the light on my modem flashes red for a few seconds, then flashes green, then holds a steady green, then allows me to browse the internet for about 20 seconds until it happens again, except the second time, it doesn’t let me browse at all until the process repeats itself. It occurs every single night from anywhere between 7:30 PM to 7:30 AM, which is the only time I really get to use the internet. I have called AT&T literally over 30 times in one month. They have sent over five technicians over, and NONE of them have fixed the problem. There is no satellite dish or burglar alarm, the modem is not near any electrical device, the phone is in a different phone jack than the DSL is. The phone has a filter on it, and the DSL doesn’t, even though it doesn’t work either way. I have NO problems during the day – only the night. I’ve been through four modems already.
The modem is a Siemens SpeedStream 4100B. I have tried plugging the computer into different phone jacks, moving the modem around, adding and removing filters from the DSL phone line, and none of it works. Please keep in mind that I don’t speak computer talk, and I won’t understand too many technical terms

Most ISP’s reset their systems overnight .. however a technician would know that …

Check out your phone extension wiring .. at a guess it’s phone wire pick-up from other electrical equipment in your (or your neighbours) house .. (microwaves, cookers, kettles etc)

NB> The DSL splitter should be on the main or ‘master’ socket – from which a wire goes to your modem and (ideally) ALL you extensions should be wired via the ‘phone’ arm of the splitter …..
