well halo most houses come with a skeleton key that builders will put on the top of the frame around your doors. check to see if there is a key up there. should be one for every door though if a burglar broke in it doesnt take much to pop a door open. my friend is a police officer in manchester. ha ha! but they had a situation that might help you. they had a teenage dtr that had a habit of sneaking out at night. so what they did is attach a sensor to her bedroom door and it would go off if she tried to leave. the sound is super loud and frightening. just like an alarm system. if you tried putting it on the other side of the door before locking it then if someone did by chance try to break the door open the alarm might scare the bejeebies out of them and cause them to run.just a suggestion. hope you find your answer:)

I was worrying about this same thing with my basement door. I took the doorknob off and reversed it so that I can lock it when I go to bed. I also have a very large dog that lets me know when anyone is around my house. The dog barking would give me time to get my shotgun before anyone made it into the house. Hearing a shotgun being slammed into lock and load is a big deterrent and you may never even have to use it.

Get a motion detector added upstairs that would save you a lot of time, one extra motion detector can be added on to your existing alarm system pretty easily. Keep valuables in a locked safe that is has been inserted between your carry beams in the wall so they can't walk off with it. Keep all paperwork and jewelry in there but if its bad in your neighborhood consider keeping valuables in a safety deposit box in your bank they are usually free if you have accounts with them.
Most everything else is replaceable, furniture, clothing, computers, tv sets and the like is all insured, think personal safety before things.

Or change ur door handles to these:
they can look both ways.(key can b on either side)

Once they are inside the house you do not want to interfere with their movements or they may take it out on your house. The door pins are inside the room so even a locked door can be removed form inside. I would tack a carpet nailing strip to each window seal. Then you would have blood samples to compare when they are caught. An advanced security system is called for in this case. One that have contact with the police to limit the time they have indoors. A short term solution is to paint bars on your bathroom windows to look like the real thing.

I think it is dangerous just in case you get locked in. I suggest having a key hidden in your bathroom. Or instead you can add just a clip type lock similar to what they have in motels/hotels rooms. Have to remember that they can always pop off the hinge pins if the door opens toward the inside of the bathroom, but you can buy hinges that the pins cannot be removed when the door is closed. Or you can take hammer and a hard chisel and ping the hinge so the pin cannot come out at all.
