best home security?

kristy asked:

i have no choice but to live in a town that has alot of robbery and vandalism , i thought bout locking all the gates with a pad lock at night, buying security cameras, and we have two dogs that are very protective, but we seem to get robbed by people i know my dogs never attack someone once i let them know its okay for them to be in the house so therefor if my dogs are home and im not home and they come to the house my dogs wont attack, what are the best places to buy security cameras , isnt there something i can buy to put on all the windows and doors that causes it to alarm once opened , im not talking bout an alarm system dont have enough money for that but more like sensors or something
when i say people i know im referring to friends and acquantences i know someone is backstabbing me but i cant figure out who and i cant go around accusing now can i

You can get DIY security alarms pretty cheap these days. Similar with wireless security cameras.

Don’t know where you are from but in Australia Jaycar, Dick Smith Electronics, Tandy, or any electronics store sell them…

Wow, someone reposted one of my previous answers. Thanks Sunshine Heather, I’m glad to see people are reading them and hopefully getting some help. I can now go to work with a smile on my face. :)

The one thing I would add, is to check out the article “Protection 101″ it has some great low tech idea’s on how to protect your home.
As far as video camera’s go, you could always go the cheapo webcam route, the thing is computers tend to be the first thing stolen. given the option between camera’s and a security alarm, camera’s are going to be the more expensive of the two (if you want anything decent)

If you go to a local hardware store, you should also be able to find these little noise maker window / door alarms. Not really the ideal solution because they are easy to destroy but if you cannot afford anything good this is at least better than nothing at all. They are also only effective if you are home at the time of the break-in, otherwise they are pretty much useless.

One of the biggest myths a security company will sell you on is that the security system prevents break-ins.
Well that not true. The sign they put on the door or out front may be a bit of a deterrent .
A security system just lets you know they got in. It does nothing to actually keep them out.

If you’ve got a webcam, there’s a cool bit of software that can find out who it is -
